The preparation

Prepare your cup of tea carefully with water that is not boiling hot, as the low temperatures bring out the delicate aromas beautifully. In the traditional Chinese Gongfu Cha method, tea is brewed in a Gaiwan. After a short steep, it's poured into a serving pot. This process can be repeated for several infusions.

The processing of the tea

Yellow tea production likely started as an effort to improve green tea. The processing is a guarded secret known only to a few tea masters. After the leaves are pan-fired, they're wrapped in cloths to encourage mild, controlled oxidation.

Yunnan, China

The origin of the tea

Tea has been cultivated in China's Yunnan province for thousands of years. In this subtropical climate, ancient tea trees grow on misty hills. Today, Yunnan is famous for its black teas and traditional Pu-erhs. Known as the origin of tea, it's often referred to as the "birthplace of tea."

What kind of tea is Leizu's Golden Silk?

Leizu's Golden Silk is a rare yellow tea from China. This Chinese yellow tea from Yunnan is known for its smooth, mellow character and delicately spicy sweetness.

What does Leizu's Golden Silk taste like?

Leizu's Golden Silk tastes soft, rounded and elegant. Typical of this yellow tea are delicate, naturally sweet and lightly spicy notes, without the grassy sharpness some people associate with green tea.

Is Leizu's Golden Silk a natural tea without added flavourings?

Yes, Leizu's Golden Silk is not flavoured. The taste of this premium tea comes solely from the leaf and the rare processing method used for yellow tea.

What makes Leizu's Golden Silk special as a yellow tea?

Leizu's Golden Silk is a true rarity, as its production is highly labour-intensive and mastered by only a small number of tea makers in limited quantities. The complex processing, including the characteristic yellowing step, gives the tea its particularly mellow, smooth and harmonious flavour.

How is Leizu's Golden Silk made?

For Leizu's Golden Silk, the tea leaves are gently rested after heating and then allowed to oxidise in a mild, controlled way. This traditional method gives the Chinese yellow tea its yellow liquor, delicate aromatics and rounded character.

Does Leizu's Golden Silk contain caffeine?

Yes, Leizu's Golden Silk naturally contains caffeine, as yellow tea is made from the Camellia sinensis tea plant. The caffeine content in the cup can vary slightly depending on the amount used, the brewing time and the water temperature.

How should I brew Leizu's Golden Silk?

It is best prepared with water below boiling point so that its delicate aromas can fully come through. A gentle preparation in a gaiwan or a small teapot with a short infusion time works particularly well.
