Gifts

In Germany, presents are traditionally opened on the evening of 24 December. In many other countries, such as the UK or the United States, gifts are opened on the morning of 25 December.

Traditions differ:

• 24 December in Germany
• 25 December in many English-speaking countries
• 6 January in parts of Spain and Italy

In Italy, Babbo Natale brings gifts at Christmas. On 6 January, the kind-hearted La Befana also brings small treats, especially for children.

In Sweden, gifts are delivered by the Jultomte — a friendly Christmas gnome often accompanied by small helpers known as Tomten.

Traditionally, the Three Kings bring presents on 6 January. Increasingly, however, Papá Noel also brings gifts on 24 or 25 December.

Most people spend between €20 and €50 on smaller gifts, €50 to €100 for close friends and family, and more for special occasions. At P&T you’ll find suitable ideas across all budgets.

Christmas gifts are, of course, very personal. As a guide, they should feel thoughtful, high-quality and well suited to the recipient. Popular options include gift sets, elegant ceramics, limited editions or gifts that create memorable moments.

For those who seem to have it all, experiences or high-quality indulgences are always appreciated — such as exceptional teas, limited sets or handcrafted accessories. Tasteful, personal touches tend to make a lasting impression.

The five-gift rule suggests giving only a small, carefully selected number of presents:

• Something they want
• Something they need
• Something to wear
• Something to read or learn
• Something special — such as a gourmet product or an experience

Current favourites include sustainable and fair-trade products, wellness and mindfulness gifts, high-quality foods and tea sets, minimalist design pieces and personalised items.
