The two main types of Pu Erh tea
Sheng Pu Erh (raw Pu Erh)
Sheng Pu Erh is the original form of Pu Erh tea. The tea matures naturally over many years, developing increasingly complex aromas as it ages.

- mineral
- lightly bitter
With increasing maturity, softer and deeper flavour notes emerge.
Shou Pu Erh (ripe Pu Erh)
Shou Pu Erh – also known as “ripe Pu Erh” – is produced using a controlled fermentation process that accelerates natural ageing.
Typical flavour notes:
- earthy
- woody
- cocoa
- warm & smooth
This style is especially popular for its mild, rounded character.
What does Pu Erh tea taste like?
Pu Erh tea is known for its exceptional aromatic depth. Its flavour profile can vary greatly depending on origin, age and processing.
Common flavour notes include:
- damp earth
- dark wood
- cocoa
- dried fruit
- leather
- honey
Many Pu Erh teas can be infused multiple times, with the flavour evolving from infusion to infusion.
How do I prepare Pu Erh tea?
For a classic preparation:
- Use 3–5 g of Pu Erh tea per 200 ml of water
- Heat water to approximately 95–100 °C
- Infuse for 10–30 seconds
- Enjoy several infusions
Pu Erh tea is particularly well suited to Gongfu preparation, where short, repeated infusions reveal the tea’s different flavour layers.
