FAQ about Matcha Strainer

A matcha sifter sifts the fine powder before whisking and breaks up any clumps – so your matcha comes out even, creamy and beautifully frothy. Without sifting, small lumps often stay behind and settle at the bottom, spoiling the experience. A small extra with a big impact on texture and taste.
Matcha clumps because the powder is extremely fine – the tiny particles (around 5–17 microns) stick together through static attraction, not because of moisture. That's why even top-quality matcha forms little lumps in storage. One pass through the sifter and the problem's gone.
Sifting isn't a must, but it's the easiest trick for lump-free, creamy matcha. Especially if you care about fine foam and an even taste, it's worth doing every time. A sifter is part of the little core kit for your matcha ritual, alongside a bowl and bamboo whisk.
Rest the sifter on your matcha bowl, add about 1–2 g (roughly 1 tsp) of matcha and push it through with a spoon until no lumps remain. Then add hot water (around 70°C) and whisk in an M-motion until frothy. It works just as well with hojicha powder, by the way.
Yes, a fine-mesh stainless kitchen sieve will do the job in a pinch. But a dedicated matcha sifter is matched to the powder's fineness and your bowl size, sits better in the hand and is easy to clean. For a clean, relaxed ritual it's simply the handier choice.
Our matcha sifter is made of metal and dishwasher-safe – just rinse it out or pop it in the dishwasher. The only thing that matters is letting it dry fully before you put it away. That keeps it looking good and working well for a long time.
A matcha sifter is fine-meshed and designed to sift powder and break up clumps, while a classic tea strainer holds back loose leaf tea while it steeps. For matcha or hojicha powder you want the fine matcha sifter; for loose leaf tea, a regular strainer or tea filter. Two tools for two very different jobs.
